Understanding Water Types

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.  There are three types of water.  Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean.  The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water.  Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous.  Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more.  Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster.  Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Be Prepared for Flooding

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage.  All 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods, per floodsmart.gov.

According to the American Red Cross, (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following flood safety tips:

Stay away from floodwaters.  If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way.  Even six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

Keep children out of the water.  They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

Flooding Happens Everywhere

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA), "approximately 75% of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding."  NOAA lists the most common flood hazards in the United States as:

Flash Flooding, River Flooding, Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation from Tropical and Non-Tropical Systems, Burn Scars/Debris Flows (caused by wildfires), Ice/Debris Jams, Snowmelt, Dry Wash (caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas), and Dam Breaks/Levee Failures

Just because you haven't experienced a flood doesn't mean you won't in the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities.  On average, floods cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the U.S., and commercial flood claims average more than $75,000 (NFIP).

Preventative Eagle River Water Damage Tips

Water Damage Preventative Eagle River Water Damage Tips SERVPRO Says Keep Your Downspouts Unclogged to Prevent Ice Buildup

SERVPRO Offers Advice to Prevent Water Damage in Eagle River

Every year Eagle River water damage causes millions of dollars in damages. It can be the result of pipes bursting, leaks, or natural disasters. Even though water can cause a lot of damage, there are several things you can do to reduce the severity of the damage.

Simple Prevention Techniques
With some simple prevention techniques, you can prevent or reduce substantial water damage costs. When you leave your home for vacation, turn off your main water line. This will ensure that flooding will not be the result of a busted frozen pipe or hose. When the weather is frigid, allow your faucets to drip regularly. That way any water that freezes will have room to expand without bursting a pipe.

Make sure to clean gutters and downspouts frequently, so clogs from leaves, dirt, and other debris don’t cause gutter damage or overflowing water to enter your home. Always have your hose connection fittings checked yearly and regularly check on your appliances. Not only will this be more cost and energy efficient, but it could also prevent a major catastrophe.

Look for Small Signs of Water Damage
Also, pay close attention to any small signs that water damage is occurring. If you notice a water stain on the ceiling or water spot in the wood, that could be a sign of a leak. That leak could continue to warp construction materials until you have significant damage inside the structure of your home. Make sure appliance hose fittings and connections are properly tightened and sealed. This could be with a refrigerator ice maker line, washing machine hose, or other appliance. Remove and replace old caulk and grout around sinks, tubs, and tile work. Always check for leaks around faucets, drains, and water supply lines. Test your sump pump each season to ensure that it will properly transport water out through a drainpipe and away from the property.

Protect Your Furnishings and Other Valuables
Keep valuable items and other furniture off of areas that are prone to flooding by placing them on tables or crates with legs. That way if a flood occurs, some of your property will be protected by being higher than the floor. Watch your roof carefully for any shingle damage or flashing, especially by chimneys, that is out of place. Ensure that your R insulation factor is sufficient for your attic. This will help eliminate the potential for ice damming on the roof and gutters. By completing little fixes, you save yourself from potential water damage costs later.

Weatherproof Your Home
Before winter begins (if it ever ends), be sure and disconnect all water hoses from around your home and turn the water valves off completely. Invest in foam covers for your outside spigots. This cheap fix will keep cold out and insulate the area around the taps which will help prevent freezing and water damage in Eagle River. Further, be sure to seal window cracks and sealants around doors to further prevent water from entering your home during a storm or flood.

If after all your proactive efforts, water damage in Eagle River becomes an issue, call SERVPRO for an immediate response to mitigate damage, and save you time and money. We can restore your property to pre-loss condition "Like it never even happened."

Tips on Palmer Residential Water Damage Restoration

Water Damage Restoration: What You Need To Know

When your home floods or is subjected to a leaky pipe, your property is almost always subjected to excess water. This Palmer water damage must be addressed and resolved immediately. If not, the structural integrity of your property could be damaged and you could also undergo an unwanted mold invasion. However, the operations managers of SERVPRO have identified several steps you can implement to minimize damages, remain calm, and get your house back in order as quickly as possible. Here are some of the steps that you should implement:

 1. Do Not Attempt A DIY Project.

It makes sense that you would want to immediately start moving valuables, cleaning the floor, and eliminating any other issues that resulted from water damage. However, this is the worst course of action you can take. There are a wide range of health hazards that standing water poses and most homeowners do not possess the protective clothing and equipment necessary to complete the cleanup process without exposing themselves to these risks.

 2. Find Your Insurance Policy.

Another thing you should definitely do when you undergo water damage in Palmer is to find your insurance policy. This document will specify which items in your house are covered. The policy will also help you file your claim with the insurance agent. Typically, the insurance company will assign you an adjuster. They may also schedule a visit. If the situation is urgent enough, they may make an adjustment over the phone.

 3. Call A Water Damage Restoration Company.

This step is quite important. As soon as you realize your property has been subjected to water damage in Palmer, you need to contact a restoration company. These individuals will be able to offer you a wide range of remediation services, including the initial assessment, drying, content restoration, and mold removal. Additionally, the water damage restoration company can work with your insurance agent to ensure that they understand the extent of the damages so you can get the maximum coverage.
