SERVPRO Helping to Clean Up Anchorage YMCA "Like it never happened."

According to the YMCA website, "YMCA had a pressurized water pipe failure in the front part of the building between the restrooms.  This was discovered on Sunday morning after and estimated 6 hours of water flowing onto the first floor. The only areas on the first floor spared of nearly three inches of standing water were the locker rooms and pool area. The water damage to the floor and drywall is extensive.  The disaster recovery crew has been working 12 hour plus days since Sunday to remove the water, access damage, removed damaged material and plan for restoration."

SERVPRO of North Anchorage is the disaster recovery crew the YMCA mentions in the paragraph above. Many people will uncover areas of hidden mold when working on their property, such as while renovating the home, and they may wonder what to do about their Palmer mold damage. Others will spot signs of mold in visible locations, and all may wonder what they can do to remove the fungi from their property. At first thought, you may think about scrubbing the area with bleach, but this is not recommended. There may be a better way to deal with smaller or larger areas of mold growth on your property.

Why Mold Needs to Be Removed
Mold is a naturally occurring organism that can grow on a variety of surfaces in the home. It thrives in areas that are moist and dark, so rooms that may be most likely to develop it are kitchens, bathrooms, and areas of the home that have been exposed to water such as through a plumbing leak or a flood. While it is naturally occurring, it can cause health issues. Because of this, you want to have removed as much of the mold as possible. Keep in mind that mold spores will always be present; the trick is to limit the number and the conducive conditions that can lead to another mold infestation.

The Problem With Removing Mold on Your Own
Several problems are associated with removing mold on your own. First, scrubbing mold patches with bleach will not usually get down to the hyphae, or roots, and they can continue to grow.  Spores can also be dislodged and become airborne. When this happens, they can circulate into other areas of the structure to start a new growth zone. Second, you run the risk of inhaling the mold spores which may cause adverse health effects. To make sure the problem is resolved, you may consider the benefits of having a professional company like SERVPRO remediate your structure's Palmer mold damage.

What Professional Services Entail
If you have never used professional services for Palmer mold damage, you may question what the work entails. This particular type of service is designed to contain the affected area completely so that mold spores do not disperse to unaffected rooms. Utilizing OSHA approved clothing, gear, HEPA filtration equipment, and air scrubbers; the skilled SERVPRO technicians can remove the vast majority of the mold. It is not possible to entirely eradicate all mold from a structure. Then the final disinfecting and deodorizing to remove any remaining musty odor are performed.

Palmer Flood Damage--Needs Fast Storm Damage Help

Storm Damage Palmer Flood Damage--Needs Fast Storm Damage Help Flood water damage can cause havoc to a Palmer Property

SERVPRO Extracts Water from Storm and Flood Damaged Properties in Palmer

Palmer flooding in your home can cause many problems for you. That might sound like an understatement, however, many people do not understand what this amount of pooling water can do to their houses. First of all, flooding can come from the groundwater that rises from a local river or stream. It can originate from a septic tank backup or through the less than adequate waterproofing in your basement walls. A leaking pipe or frozen pipe that bursts just about anywhere in your home and on any floor, can qualify as a flood because it causes many of the same problems. When standing water covers several rooms from a storm or malfunction, you need help.

When you see the standing water in the basement, crawlspace or lowest level of your house, whether you know the source or not, heavy pumping equipment is needed to mitigate the impending water damage.

The water begins by being absorbed into building materials and furniture such as wooden pieces and their fabrics. If the water has gotten into your basement from the first floor, it may have passed over and through a storage closet. Therefore, clothing may have been impacted as well as stored personal items, electronics, and photo albums. It has also gotten into and behind walls, under sinks and any ceilings and sub floorings

The increased moisture level can also create a perfect environment for molds to grow with 48-72 hours if the structure is not quickly dried. Drywall that has become soaked with this liquid can start the process of breaking down. This breakdown can be noticed as a bulging and crack as well as deteriorating and falling away from the attached studs. Electrical wiring may create a hazardous situation.

Water removal must begin with powerful truck mounted water pumps, sump pumps, and wet vacuums. Fortunately, the SERVPRO vehicle has all the necessary equipment on board to begin the water extraction immediately. The possibility of contaminated water is high from a storm-induced flood. The IICRC trained technicians can install dehumidifiers and air movers to increase evaporation rates and hasten the drying process. After three to five days, most water damaged homes in Palmer will be dry enough to reenter. Before returning to a safe and wholesome environment, the SERVPRO experts will use foggers, thermal and chemical, to broadcast antibacterial, antifungal, and disinfecting agents to sanitize the structure. A final walk-through with you will guarantee your satisfaction with the condition of your home "Like it never even happened."

If you have experienced a flood in your Palmer home and need the help of a premier water damage restoration company, call SERVPRO of North Anchorage at (907) 688-3001 for assistance. We will respond quickly 24/7.

Preventative Eagle River Water Damage Tips

Water Damage Preventative Eagle River Water Damage Tips SERVPRO Says Keep Your Downspouts Unclogged to Prevent Ice Buildup

SERVPRO Offers Advice to Prevent Water Damage in Eagle River

Every year Eagle River water damage causes millions of dollars in damages. It can be the result of pipes bursting, leaks, or natural disasters. Even though water can cause a lot of damage, there are several things you can do to reduce the severity of the damage.

Simple Prevention Techniques
With some simple prevention techniques, you can prevent or reduce substantial water damage costs. When you leave your home for vacation, turn off your main water line. This will ensure that flooding will not be the result of a busted frozen pipe or hose. When the weather is frigid, allow your faucets to drip regularly. That way any water that freezes will have room to expand without bursting a pipe.

Make sure to clean gutters and downspouts frequently, so clogs from leaves, dirt, and other debris don’t cause gutter damage or overflowing water to enter your home. Always have your hose connection fittings checked yearly and regularly check on your appliances. Not only will this be more cost and energy efficient, but it could also prevent a major catastrophe.

Look for Small Signs of Water Damage
Also, pay close attention to any small signs that water damage is occurring. If you notice a water stain on the ceiling or water spot in the wood, that could be a sign of a leak. That leak could continue to warp construction materials until you have significant damage inside the structure of your home. Make sure appliance hose fittings and connections are properly tightened and sealed. This could be with a refrigerator ice maker line, washing machine hose, or other appliance. Remove and replace old caulk and grout around sinks, tubs, and tile work. Always check for leaks around faucets, drains, and water supply lines. Test your sump pump each season to ensure that it will properly transport water out through a drainpipe and away from the property.

Protect Your Furnishings and Other Valuables
Keep valuable items and other furniture off of areas that are prone to flooding by placing them on tables or crates with legs. That way if a flood occurs, some of your property will be protected by being higher than the floor. Watch your roof carefully for any shingle damage or flashing, especially by chimneys, that is out of place. Ensure that your R insulation factor is sufficient for your attic. This will help eliminate the potential for ice damming on the roof and gutters. By completing little fixes, you save yourself from potential water damage costs later.

Weatherproof Your Home
Before winter begins (if it ever ends), be sure and disconnect all water hoses from around your home and turn the water valves off completely. Invest in foam covers for your outside spigots. This cheap fix will keep cold out and insulate the area around the taps which will help prevent freezing and water damage in Eagle River. Further, be sure to seal window cracks and sealants around doors to further prevent water from entering your home during a storm or flood.

If after all your proactive efforts, water damage in Eagle River becomes an issue, call SERVPRO for an immediate response to mitigate damage, and save you time and money. We can restore your property to pre-loss condition "Like it never even happened."
